Fours years ago N950 arrived in the mail #TBT

Four years and two days to be exact. A N950 arrived. The absolutely best phone design ever made by Nokia, (IMO of course).

Nokia N950 dev kit

Full size touch screen with a full QWERTY keyboard that you could hide/show, running a proper Linux. A hackers dream device this. Just lovely.

Very unfortunate that the "N9 with keyboard" never go to market, it would have been an awesome device.

sigh...

OpenStreetMap tiles on N9 Foursquare app

A cute little hack, use proper OpenStreetMap maps with map tile caching instead of always re-downloading the Nokia Map tiles.

Notice something different ? :)
Details later...

Radio X3M app or how to use Qt, Gstreamer and the N9

As a bit of a training in using Qt and Gstreamer together I made a Radio X3M app for the N9, first mainly for personal use but maybe there is one or two Radio X3M listeners with a N9, who knows.

Submitted it to QA today, it is also available as a direct download here. Sources are are in git here. The most interesting part is probably the QML Gstreamer RTSP player element, here. It uses a bunch of elements that are connected to various UI elements for Volume, Equalizer and Surround.

OpenStreetMap Maps with QML Map object

QtQuick/QML comes with a nice ready made Map element that can show map tiles and dots and polygons and stuff. Really nice and all, unfortunately the default and only map available is Nokia maps. And well, I prefer free maps. So, how to get OpenStreetMap working ?

One option is to make your own QML based map element, I started on that but never had enough patience to finish it.

But after some googling around I found qtm-geoservices-extras ! Today I started to look into it a bit more and trying to figure out how to get in working when targeting the N9 as we have the silly problem that anything submitted to the Nokia Store can not depend on any outside packages. Extremely annoying that.

The extra geoservices contain Qt plugins for providing map (and route, search, etc) features from OSM and Google. I didn't care of the goolge plugin at all.

So how to get the plugin working when you make your own app ?

Adding OpenStreetMap Qt map provider to your app

QML Map with OpenStreetMap tiles, running on the simulator

First, checkout qtm-geoservices-extras
git clone git://gitorious.org/qtm-geoservices-extras/qtm-geoservices-extras.git

Then copy the openstreetmap directory into your own project

cp -a qtm-geoservices-extras/openstreetmap your-map-app/

The edit your projects .pro file to include:
include(openstreetmap/openstreetmap.pro)

And in your main.cpp (or whatever), add:

#include <qtplugin>
Q_IMPORT_PLUGIN(qtgeoservices_osm)
Then edit the openstreetmap.pro file in the openstreetmap directory, like this:
  1. Add static to CONFIG
  2. Remove or comment out the include(../common.pri)
  3. Remove or comment out TARGET=
  4. Remove or comment out TEMPLATE=
  5. Add
    INCLUDEPATH += $$PWD
    DEPENDPATH += $$PWD
End result should look something like this:

#TEMPLATE = lib
CONFIG += plugin
#TARGET = $$qtLibraryTarget(qtgeoservices_osm)
PLUGIN_TYPE=geoservices
# include(../common.pri)
QT += network
CONFIG += mobility static
MOBILITY = location
INCLUDEPATH += $$PWD
DEPENDPATH += $$PWD

Then add the map element to your QML code

import QtMobility.location 1.2

    Map {
        id: nmap
        width: 480;
        height: 300;
        anchors.top: osm.bottom;
        zoomLevel: 10
        center: mypos;
        connectivityMode: Map.OfflineMode;
        plugin : Plugin {
                name : "openstreetmap"
                PluginParameter{ name:  "mapping.cache.directory" ; value: "/tmp/qtmap" }
                PluginParameter{ name:  "mapping.cache.size" ; value: "200000" }
            }
    }

    Coordinate {
        id: mypos
        latitude: 60.45;
        longitude: 22.25;
    }

And that should do it. Build your app and try it out!

mod-support for N9 published!

After shuffling around the files and playing with symlinks I got a package together that QA liked. And it is now published in the Nokia Store! Enjoy

Recording the N9/N950 "desktop"

More as reminder for myself, but here goes.

This has more-or-less been posted on many forums, but not with the flipping. gstreamer comes with a nice element for it, videoflip, worked fine on my desktop but didn't like to link on the phone, after some head scratching I found that it needed a colorspace conversion both before and after for some reason.

#!/bin/sh
ENC=dsphdh264enc
W=800
H=480
R=5
gst-launch-0.10 -e -t -v -m ximagesrc ! videoscale ! videorate ! \
 video/x-raw-rgb,framerate=${R}/1,width=${W},height=${H} ! ffmpegcolorspace ! \
 videoflip method=clockwise ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ${ENC} ! \
 avimux ! filesink location=desktop.avi

Now for something completely different, Tori Amos, Helsinki 28.09.2011

Amazing! Tori Amos released her new album, Night of Hunters, a couple of weeks ago. I had mine pre-ordered from play.com for some time and it dropped in the next day of release. It's very different from her previous work, released on a classical label and all songs are inspired from classical works by classical masters. Listening to it needs complete focus, it can not be in the background, imho.

The Night of Hunters tour started here in Finland at the old Helsinki Ice-hall on the 28.09.2011. The show was absolutely amazing, she played most songs with a quartet and some solo. I tried to tweet (@oniongarlic) as much of the set list, but my song title memory is not the best, also I didn't recognize all the new songs.
From the new album, my favorite is Star Whisperer (and Carry), especially after the live performance, it's just amazing.

Set list:
  1. Shattering Sea
  2. Graveyard
  3. Suede
  4. Baker Baker
  5. Fearlessness
  6. Mrs. Jesus (solo)
  7. Marianne (solo)
  8. Girl Disappearing
  9. Cloud On My Tongue
  10. Star Whisperer
  11. Running To Stand Still (solo) [U2]
  12. Sister Janet (solo)
  13. Caught A Lite Sneeze (solo)
  14. Cruel
  15. Nautical Twilight
  16. Snow Cherries From France
  17. Winter
Encore
  1. A Multitude of Shades [Apollon Musagete Quartet piece]
  2. Your Ghost
Second encore
  1. Mr. Zebra (solo)
  2. Tear In Your Hand (solo)
  3. Silent All These Years (solo)
  4. Carry
(Shameless copy from undented)

A very good recording is available on toritraders.com but to not completely go no-computer-geek with this post, I took this as a nice opportunity to test the N950 microphone quality and recorded the whole thing. Absolutely amazing quality for a phone, check out a sample here. And to be more geeky, I had to do the recording using gstreamer from the CLI as the currently available recording app on Ovi store records in a silly 32-bit, 22Khz, mono format, how strange is that ?
Anyway, this did the trick nicely:
gst-launch-0.10 pulsesrc ! audioconvert !
 audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,width=16,channels=2 !
 queue ! wavenc ! filesink location=rec.wav

N950 module playback packages

And if you would like to test module playback on your N950 or N9, then you can install the armel packages available at http://ftp.tal.org/pub/maemo/testing/harmattan/

You need these two:
Just install with dpkg and that should be it.

(Let me know if it works, especially if you have a N9 with the rumored to have more up-to-date firmware than the one on the N950. Thanks.)

N950 module playback

Preliminary testing of adding module playback support to the N950 (and N9). Getting playback didn't require as much work as for the N900, tracker already marks modules as audio and the media player picks them up, but can't play them as it's missing the required gstreamer element (modplug).

A proper tracker miner would be a plus, as right now all modules get dumped in the "Unknown artist"/"Unknown album" categories and the filename is used as the title. Not nice.

Anyway, my first talkie:

Something nice in the mail

I was on holiday in Greece when the N9 and N950 was announced so I missed the opportunity to get a developer device, as I didn't spend much time on-line. Fortunately I was able to get on the next 50 devices and a couple of weeks ago something nice came in the mail.
Thank you Nokia.
