Grab H.264 video on Raspberry Pi with gstreamer

(More like a note to self this.)

Load Video4Linux driver:

sudo modprobe bcm2835-v4l2

Grab some video into Matroska container:

gst-launch-1.0 v4l2src ! video/x-h264,framerate=30/1 ! h264parse ! matroskamux ! filesink location=test.mkv

In Full HD:

gst-launch-1.0 v4l2src ! video/x-h264,width=1920,height=1080,framerate=30/1 ! h264parse ! matroskamux ! filesink location=test.mkv

Jolla tracker music support package now available!

Sorry for the massive delay, just over a year or so... Anyway, now you can listen to your favorite tracker music files on your Jolla and feel all nostalgic!

Because of harbour limitations, mod-support is only available from openrepos.

Y-Radio works again!

Finally got some spare time to look into it again. The thing is, YLE decided to stop offering icecast streams that worked perfectly and instead offers only RTSP and HLS streams now. At the time, the multimedia stack on Jolla had problems playing back RTSP streams (choppy sound) and HLS support didn't exist at all. So nothing I could do about it at that time.

I had already started to look into how on earth you could use my own private copy of gstreamer to overcome these issues (as direct usage of gstreamer is a no-no for harbour apps at this time), but luckily the summer update fixed RTSP playback (and almost the HLS support, but not quite, probably this bug) and Y-Radio is now fixed as much as I can fix it.

At this time only low quality RTSP streams are supported as the HLS support is buggy, it won't reload the m3u playlist. But if I can figure out how to use gstreamer without using the system gstreamer, then we can do proper shit! (and add such nice things as an Equalizer for example)

Available now in Openrepos and hopefully soon in the official Jolla store (waiting for QA right now)

Radio X3M app or how to use Qt, Gstreamer and the N9

As a bit of a training in using Qt and Gstreamer together I made a Radio X3M app for the N9, first mainly for personal use but maybe there is one or two Radio X3M listeners with a N9, who knows.

Submitted it to QA today, it is also available as a direct download here. Sources are are in git here. The most interesting part is probably the QML Gstreamer RTSP player element, here. It uses a bunch of elements that are connected to various UI elements for Volume, Equalizer and Surround.

Lyssna på x3m med gstreamer under Linux

A quick hint for sv_FI (or anyone else that knows Swedish) geeks that listen to Radio X3M:

gst-launch rtspsrc \
location=rtsp://stream.yle.mobi/yle/live/x3m.sdp latency=500 ! \
decodebin ! queue min-threshold-buffers=10 ! autoaudiosink

Enjoy :)

Gstreamer echoprint module

I've been planning on doing this for a long time already but got finally inspired to do it. An echoprint gstreamer module. It is not tested that much as I have a hard time getting anything recognized trough the API, using both my own code and the echoprint-codegen binary.
I've tried with many of the songs that they should have information about but no luck. The only song I got identified properly was "ABBA - Dancing queen" and only if I skip the first 20 seconds.

Any ideas ?

Oh, code is in git here.

Build, install and run a pipeline like:

gst-launch-0.10 -m filesrc location=some_song.mp3 ! \
 decodebin ! audioresample ! audioconvert ! \
 echoprint seconds=20 ! fakesink sync=0

echoprint will post a message with a code element, like this:
Got message #83 from element "echoprint0" (element): echoprint, code=(string)"eJzNl2uuHLkNhbekJ0UtR6LI.....

mod-support for N9 published!

After shuffling around the files and playing with symlinks I got a package together that QA liked. And it is now published in the Nokia Store! Enjoy

Recording the N9/N950 "desktop"

More as reminder for myself, but here goes.

This has more-or-less been posted on many forums, but not with the flipping. gstreamer comes with a nice element for it, videoflip, worked fine on my desktop but didn't like to link on the phone, after some head scratching I found that it needed a colorspace conversion both before and after for some reason.

#!/bin/sh
ENC=dsphdh264enc
W=800
H=480
R=5
gst-launch-0.10 -e -t -v -m ximagesrc ! videoscale ! videorate ! \
 video/x-raw-rgb,framerate=${R}/1,width=${W},height=${H} ! ffmpegcolorspace ! \
 videoflip method=clockwise ! ffmpegcolorspace ! ${ENC} ! \
 avimux ! filesink location=desktop.avi

Now for something completely different, Tori Amos, Helsinki 28.09.2011

Amazing! Tori Amos released her new album, Night of Hunters, a couple of weeks ago. I had mine pre-ordered from play.com for some time and it dropped in the next day of release. It's very different from her previous work, released on a classical label and all songs are inspired from classical works by classical masters. Listening to it needs complete focus, it can not be in the background, imho.

The Night of Hunters tour started here in Finland at the old Helsinki Ice-hall on the 28.09.2011. The show was absolutely amazing, she played most songs with a quartet and some solo. I tried to tweet (@oniongarlic) as much of the set list, but my song title memory is not the best, also I didn't recognize all the new songs.
From the new album, my favorite is Star Whisperer (and Carry), especially after the live performance, it's just amazing.

Set list:
  1. Shattering Sea
  2. Graveyard
  3. Suede
  4. Baker Baker
  5. Fearlessness
  6. Mrs. Jesus (solo)
  7. Marianne (solo)
  8. Girl Disappearing
  9. Cloud On My Tongue
  10. Star Whisperer
  11. Running To Stand Still (solo) [U2]
  12. Sister Janet (solo)
  13. Caught A Lite Sneeze (solo)
  14. Cruel
  15. Nautical Twilight
  16. Snow Cherries From France
  17. Winter
Encore
  1. A Multitude of Shades [Apollon Musagete Quartet piece]
  2. Your Ghost
Second encore
  1. Mr. Zebra (solo)
  2. Tear In Your Hand (solo)
  3. Silent All These Years (solo)
  4. Carry
(Shameless copy from undented)

A very good recording is available on toritraders.com but to not completely go no-computer-geek with this post, I took this as a nice opportunity to test the N950 microphone quality and recorded the whole thing. Absolutely amazing quality for a phone, check out a sample here. And to be more geeky, I had to do the recording using gstreamer from the CLI as the currently available recording app on Ovi store records in a silly 32-bit, 22Khz, mono format, how strange is that ?
Anyway, this did the trick nicely:
gst-launch-0.10 pulsesrc ! audioconvert !
 audio/x-raw-int,rate=44100,width=16,channels=2 !
 queue ! wavenc ! filesink location=rec.wav

N950 module playback

Preliminary testing of adding module playback support to the N950 (and N9). Getting playback didn't require as much work as for the N900, tracker already marks modules as audio and the media player picks them up, but can't play them as it's missing the required gstreamer element (modplug).

A proper tracker miner would be a plus, as right now all modules get dumped in the "Unknown artist"/"Unknown album" categories and the filename is used as the title. Not nice.

Anyway, my first talkie:

gst-dmtx 0.10.3

New release of gst-dmtx out now. Major change is that buffers are handled in a thread so the pipeline won't stall if "skip" propery is set larger than 0. Set "skip=0" to use the old behavior, for example when analyzing a one buffer only image.

Get it here: gst-dmtx-0.10.3.tar.gz.

mod-support for the Nokia N900

For good old old-school demo/scene/etc music on your N900, install mod-support. Now with proper metadata extraction so the media player will show you titles (and creates a fake artists/album so all your mods go nicely into one "Album" for easy separation from those silly mp3s :)
Latest version is waiting to get built, should be available soon in extras-testing. Please vote on it so it gets into proper extras.
(While at it, I upgraded the libmodplug package and built it with proper optimizations and optification)

gst-dmtx 0.10.2

Tagged and released gst-dmtx 0.10.2, a gstreamer element for decoding datamatrix barcodes using libdmtx.

gstreamer + libdmtx = yay :)

I've been thinking about writing my first ever proper gstreamer element using libdmtx, it took a while to get there but now it finally works, see the screenshot:

Update:
Sources are available in my git repository.

Some Mapper progress...

Mapper has now a pretty nice feature list:
* Can uses OSM data for Places, Streets and POIs
o Importer converts planet XML file to sqlite database with selected features
o Reads bzip2 compressed 0.5 API planet XML files
* POIs and Streets can be searched
* Displays street and place where you are
* Setting arbitrary destination point
* Setting destination to POI or Street
* Display rough estimate of distance to destination
* Periodic distance to destination announcement
* Show a bearing to destination in heading compass
* Show a bearing to next way point in heading compass
* Quick POI Add interface (Hard coded list for now)
* Click POI for information
* Displays GPS sky and signal information
* Route way point list with directions
* Simple Track point filter (by HDOP, VDOP and angle)
* Speech output for route way points and destination information
o Uses espeak+gstreamer
* Supports both normal Desktops (plain Gtk+) and Internet Tablets (770, N800, N810) (Hildon)

Unfortunately, I haven't had enough free time to work on routing just yet, but it will come soon I hope.

Learning gstreamer

gstreamer is quite nice... after some head scratching I was able to get a audio streamed from my desktop to my 770.

On the desktop:
gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location="KNULLA.MOD" ! modplug ! audioconvert ! lame ! queue ! tcpserversink host=nokia770

and on the 770:
gst-launch-0.10 tcpclientsrc host=angel.tal.org ! dspmp3sink

Fun stuff! :)
